Question:

Pipes Go Bang After Boiler Goes Off?

Have oil heat with tank-less hot water. Heat not being utilized now b/c it is spring but furnace turns on to heat water. After boiler turns off there is gurgling in the boiler and pipes and then some loud banging, particularly late at night when there is no water use, that I cannot isolate. Water is not being turned off or on during banging. Thanks for any help.

This sounds like you may be flashing to steam in a section of your boiler at sometime. Cold water introduced to make up used water can cause steam to implode (collapse) and cause what we refer to as steam hammer. Sometimes sections of boilers get clogged with rust and silt from city make up water and cause a pocket of Isolated trapped water and some areas that lack water. This is dangerous and boilers need to be flushed and checked, blown down and tested often. Another thing to consider is the temperature setting on the device. If set to close to boiling (on hot water boilers) it could flash to steam just about the point it cycles off. The controller might need adjusting..or calibrating..or if it can not be calibrated and deffective.. replace. There are many things to concider when operating a boiler porperly. What your sounds come from may need professional attention to be safe. blessings Rangfinder
