Question:

pitching question/ help!!!1?

i am currently a starting pitcher in high scool and i began working out my upper body recently and noticed that my velocity has been dropping. does this have anything to do with working out? is working out making my pitching slower?

Answer:

There is a very high possibility it does, but it all depends on how much you have been working out your upper body and if you are working out your upper body the day before games. If you work your upper body out to much before a game, you may have lost some strength in your upper body from all of the working out and not had time to regain it before the game, therefore causing your velocity to drop. If you work your upper body out too much, then you may plain just have worn it out and lost some of the srenght in your upper body for a period of time, causing your velocity to once again drop.
just make sure you stay flexible that is probably why you are losing velocity. when people lift weights they get bigger and sometimes those muscles will be tight so make sure you stretch after you lift everytime.
Watch your forearm if you make your forearm too strong i hear that your arm has less movement when you throw causing the velocity to drop. Pitchers who throw splitters always watch there fastball lose velocity becuase the slpitter really works out the forearm. Also working out your legs and making your leg push bigger can help your velocity.
no working out will not make it slower.. working out the wrong way might definitely... make sure you are not doing a lot of over the shoulder lifts, like military press...and try to stay away from heavy bench..use dumb bells...light weight with reps..but yeah working your legs is probably more important than anything..and maybe you lost flexibility...spend a little longer in warmups and really concentrate on your flexibility... im also a starting pitcher for my school, throw about 86-87... but good luck bro
as a pitcher, you shouldn't be lifting weights too much. Baseball players don't need to be muscular. You should be working on your legs so you can push off the rubber with more force, leading to a faster pitch. If you want a drill to help gain speed on your fastball, there are two very good ones i know. the first one is to get a rag, and go through your windup and really put focus on snapping it. If you get a whipping sound, it means you did the drill correctly the second one is to get a heavy fishing weight, like 5-10 pounds, and go through your windup and throw the weight. This drill can be very dangerous if you throw too far from the side, as it can hurt your elbow. i hope i helped.
