Question:

Plant Lights?

Does a regular desk lamp work generally the same compared to a plant growth light in growing duckweed? Do you have any ideas where to get a reasonably priced plant light?

Answer:

I assume this is in an aquarium? If so a regular florescent bulb will work, but not an incadescent one ( one that you screw in to the socket) you can find grow bulbs which work much better at wal-mart fairly cheap, look in the pet section, if you can't find it there try the lighting center
A regular desk lamp will work for some plants, Duck weed is one. If you want to grow plants under fluorescent light without the expense of buying grow lights I would suggest using one bulb for bright white and the other soft white. The soft gives out light waves in the lower end of the spectrum (Reds, yellows) while the other toward the blues and purples ( high end) This should be almost the same as sunlight.Keep the plants in the middle as the light spectrum fades toward the end of the tubes. Good luck and enjoy
I actually published a (VERY) little research paper on this subject. We discovered that, in general, plant lights were no better than regular lights. The main determinant was the total amount of light energy. A 60 Watt Plant light did not grow anything better than a 60 W regular light. A 75 W regular grew things better than a 60 W plant light.
