The degree isn't necessarily different, however, the path the doctor chooses with the M.D. makes the specialty. Two popular plastic surgeons Dr. Rey and Dr. Li from Dr. 90210 both received their Medical Degrees, but then took additional fellowships and tracks to make their specialty in plastic surgery. Dr. Rey's resume indicates he did a plastic surgery residency. Finally, doctors receive certification in their specialty and both Dr. Rey and Dr Li have extensive certifications as well as a great deal of continuing education experience.
