Question:

Please explain high levels of copper in urine but normal plasma levels.?

I am interested in learning more about copper toxicity. Please explain very high levels of copper excreted in urine paired with normal plasma levels.

Answer:

Copper is generally rapidly cleared by the liver, and normal excretion occurs via a biliary release, not so much via urine. However... There's an inherited disease called Willson's Disease that has to do with copper metabolism. It is a cause of progressive liver failure, and neurological degeneration. Patients exhibit normal plasma level and elevated urine level. However, liver biopsies will evidence a large concentration of copper stored there. Try checking Merck's (link below).
