Question:

Potential Copper Pipe Leak?

Hi there,My radiator got knocked off the wall and it hit the floor, but the connecting copper pipe seems to be bent or even broken, there is a small leak on the connection from the radiator to the copper pipe but that is not the main concern.I think that the copper pipe under the flooring is broken or has a leak, should i wait and see if the water pressure lowers and then i‘ll be certain there is a leak or do I have to take the flooring up and see then?By the way, this is on the upstairs in a bedroom.Thanks,Tom.

Answer:

I would be doing everything that I could to see if there was a leak now as opposed to waiting. The damage it could potentially cause under that floor and running who knows where in the ceiling, shouldn't be under estimated.
check for leaks now before it is too late, on the radiator valve it may need remaking the joint with Templar's paste and re tighten
Have you watering them enough, the fertilizer and things like that.
Hi, The leak at the connection should be an easy fix, sometimes all you need to do is loosen it, shift it just a tiny bit, and re-tighten. As to the pipe under the floor, you'll sooner see water damage in the ceiling above that pipe (if there is one) than you'll detect a pressure reduction. If you have the capacity to remove floor boards to inspect without doing too much disruption, go for it. When you get the floorboards up, you can do whatever you have to to the subfloor and know you can pretty easily make whatever repairs that needs without worrying about the appearance. In my experience piping running through the house framing is generally well supported and pretty robust, not to mention somewhat removed from the source of the stress, like your radiator falling. That would make me think that the radiator falling is unlikely to actually affect the piping in the floor. But if you're at all uneasy about it, go ahead and check it immediately before any permanent, possibly more difficult to repair damage is done.
