I'm doing a project right now, listing the pros and cons of various types of pipe, problem is I cannot think of a single pro for copper pipe. I can think of many many cons (cost, installation time, etc etc) but I'm having trouble thinking of a reason to use it over the numerous plastic pipes used for water supply. Thanks in advance for any help.
I recently completed construction of a single family rental unit, I had considered PEX tubing because of it's ease of installation and cost compared to copper. Then I was informed that rodents have an affinity for PEX and water, needless to say I went with copper
Pro's.... You can use It for an electrical ground. Personally, I think the water tastes better.. Con... #1, the cost I've recently started using pvc, If I where Bill Gates I would still be using copper
Copper is the premium product for long life and ruggedness. Maybe I'm old school, but I'd pay more to get copper. Con: I'm not certain there are no hazards associated with the new solder used on copper. More severe con to me: I'm highly concerned about the potential leakage of chemicals from soft plastics, and possibly hard plastics as well. I think this is going to blow up in peoples faces. There's already indications of hormonal changes happening in humans from exposure to the chemicals used to make soft plastics. Copper, a naturally occurring mineral, doesn't have these inherent problems.
there is no reason not to use CPVC for your water supply and PVC for your drains. especially with the high incident of copper theft at construction sites, even small ones. just make sure you check local codes.
