To increase the number of cans that the container can hold. It tends to reduce the number of times the bin has to be emptied that the cans fall into.
I would assume that the purpose is to reduce the space so that you would not unduly burden yourself in storing the cans, and ultimately could reduce the number of trips necessary to transport the cans to the recycler.
Cans will be melted to seperate aluminum from crap. They must compress them first to have less air and liquid inside of the cans that could cause possible problems in the heating process. The little crusher is just for home, to use up less space.
It reduces the volume of the cans, taking out the empty space inside, so that many, many more cans can be stored or shipped in the same space - the one I have will put about 8-10 aluminum cans in the same volume as 2 uncrushed cans.
