Lightning is one of those truly awesome forces of nature. It was awesome before the word was diluted by popular culture! This is a force to understand and truly fear. There is a reason we evolved (or were givendon't want to start THAT argument here) that emotionsurvival! If you can hear thunder, lightning can strike close to your location, even if you can not yet see clouds. Vehicles can and have been hit, usually flattening all tires. The metal in the car generally protects the occupants. Lightning can and does strike houses and has the potential to start a fire. This is rare and just because a fire starts does not mean the total loss of your home. People have been hit while inside their homes, usually while close to a window watching the storm. Like a car, wiring and other metals normally direct the current away from occupants. Homes in high lightning areas often will have lightning rods and other protection. A wound from a lightning strike is similar to a gunshot wound, small entrance but likely to have a catastrophic exit. Anyway, I survived a summer in a forest lookout tower, midwest tornado's, eastern hurricanes and motorcycle rides through the middle of horrendous lightning storms. I have felt the tingle of electricity from close strikes. I hate lightning too!
Smoke detectors beep or chirp when the battery is low. Batteries should be replaced yearly so this is a good time to replace them all. It can be hard to tell which one is actually beeping. Replacing all in your home solves this problem. If you replace them yearly, it is unlikely you will have them beeping as you are experiencing now. Gently turn the base of the smoke detector and it should come off easily. Take the wire off of the battery by unclipping. Replace the battery. Clip the wires to the battery then gently screw back to the ceiling. This should be a five minute or less job.
