I went to the range 2 days ago, when I found a huge amount of perfectly good ammo among the spent casings on the floorI took as many as I can homeAmong the ammo I found was some curious silver tipped (not paint, rather an aluminum tip) rifle rounds, in 300HH mag and 3006 SpringfieldWhat are these? Can someone ID this type of round and probably explain why someone threw out almost 20 each of these perfectly good condition rounds? My guess would be AP ammo, as those are banned in californiaBut they're non-magneticSome kind of unusual hunting ammo perhaps?
I am a long time competition shooter, ballistics technician and avid handloaderYou already answered the questionNobody leaves good ammo lying aroundThis is probably not good ammoNot like you can thow it in the trash, so, the person left it here figuring someone who loads the caliber and has a kenetic bullet puller can use the brassSince Winchester now makes gold primers - you practically need to be an expert to decide if a round is factory or home made You definitly do not want to fire this stuffThe Silver tip has been made for Winchester for along timeYou need to dispose of it properly since there is no telling how poorly it's been stored, or, why it shot so bad the owner decided to ditch itIt could so bad it might blow up someones rifleAlthough many of the old AP ammo was very magnetic - the newer tungston projectiles are not near as magneticHarder still are depleted uranium rounds, but, I doubt you will those puppies lying around! Hope this helps.
