Question:

Reacting Aluminum Foil to Hydrochloric Acid.?

I'm trying to react aluminum foil to hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogenI put the aluminum foil in the acid and a vapor/gas is produced but it is very caustic and doesn't float away like hydrogen wouldwhen I put a match to a large collection of it it ignites so I think the hydrogen is trapped in the chlorine gas or in the hydrochloric gas and it's all coming out mixxed together. How can I separate the hydrogen out or what is the gas that is coming out of the reaction?

Answer:

Hang it on the line outside to air it.
You need to wash itobviouslyThen dry ituse baby detergentgood luck.hang on a line outside.
You might try the dryel ( home dry clean) you can purchase the kit at wal mart and that should helpYou place the item in the bag and it goes into the dryerThat should remove odor.
I have several crocheted baby blankets for my son that my grandmother made for himShe smokes though, so all the blankets smelled like thatI washed them in my washing machine by themselves on a delicate cycle in a cold wash and then threw them in the dryer on air fluffIf for some reason you don't have a washing machine or dryer and you really want the smell gone, you could hand wash the blanket in your sink or tub with Dreft or Tide Free or some other non-irritating detergent and then hang them out to dry.
I don't know what you did to get belittled by these folks but here goesAluminum Foil has a thin layer of aluminum oxide over the surface, so to speed up the reaction, cut it to tiny bitsThe reaction does not produce chlorine gasThe hydrochloric acid does have its own vapor pressure (and weighs more than air), so collect your gas and then cool it down (in a freezer) the acid will come out as droplets and then Transfer the dry gas into another balloon with a glass tubeIf it is hydrogen, once it is warm again it should rise.
