So there I was today sorting and paying my bills, throwing away all those ads and credit offers (yes I shred the stuff that could get me in trouble) and I end up with a large amount of those envelopes with plastic windows in them. Fat chance for them, I pay my bills on the internet and can't afford to get books and magazines through the mail. That's what libraries are for. b) Post-consumer paper mills have systems that can take out these small amounts of contaminants. What they can't recycle is any paper that won't disolve in water. To test just feel for a waxy or plastic feel. A good example is the wrapper that comes on reams of paper.
You should double check with your local department of public works, but generally speaking the windows are not recyclable. You can cut off the plastic window part and recycle the rest of the envelope. Don't recycle the plastic. Some recyclers may throw a out the whole batch if its contaminated.
Just tear off the window including the paper backing it's glued to , throw the window away, recycle the rest of the envelope! Your still recycling 95% of the envelope and cutting waste as well!
