Question:

Refinishing Copper?

I recently repaired a lovely copper bowl of mine, and am okay with it. But now I'm thinking I should maybe refinish it after taking the existing finish off (see other question for full saga). I would like to do this myself, as I don't have much money to take it somewhere to get it redone. Advice?

Answer:

Use any lacquer thinner to remove the finish and buff the bare metal with: 1. 0000 grade steel wool. (If the existing scratches are rougher than the steel wool.) 2. Jeweler's rouge. 3. Copper polish. After you have the polish you want, spray it with a lacquer finish.

Polishing works if you want a shiny surface but if you want the original patina there are chemicals that will get the oxidation going, I'm not sure what they are but you could try vinegar which is a mild acid which won't hurt the bowl. You could leave it outside in the weather for a few months and see what happens.
