Question:

Removing VCT tiles off of Hardwood floors?

The previous owner placed VCT tiles on beautiful hardwood floors. I want to remove them, without messing up the wood too bad, since I want to sand and wax the floors after I remove them.Is there a way to do this without ruining the floors? Can I rent a machine? Should I try to heat up the tiles? They are glued on very well, and its a large area. The machines I have seen so far, look like they are made to remove tiles that are placed on concrete. Thanks in advanced

Answer:

Try a product like Goof Off first. They sellit at Home Depot or Lowes. It cost about $4.00 for a 16 oz can. Wipe on liberally with a cloth and wait a few minutes and scrub off with same cloth. It does have a somewhat harsh smell at first, so make sure adequate ventilation is available especially for a child. I am a contractor and have used this on several types of floor adhesives, but of coarse there are some that will need to be sanded.
First, okorder /.. If you don't have to deal with asbestos, you can rent a commercial floor scraper that will peel up the tile and most of the adhesive. But you might try to get up a few tiles by hand first, just to see what the hardwood floor looks like. Maye the previous owner covered them with VCT because they weren't so beautiful.

How To Remove Vct Tile
Yep heat up the tiles like you thought. The machine you talk about will remove the tiles but in your case it ll chew up the floor to that your trying to save. You ll need to rent or buy the heat gun since the normal hair dryer won t heat hot enough to do the job. HINT HINT start at the out side and work in since glue will be tacky for awhile. Have a variety of hand scrapers to see what will work for you if your working alone. With a partner some one can stand and use a floor scraper while some one heats the tile. GL
