Question:

Shop Assembled Boiler VS. Packaged Boiler?

This isn't an Engineering Question per say, but you mechanical engineers might be able to help me with this. If there is any Power Engineers out there, this is right down your alley.I would like to know if im correct in comparing Show Assembled Boilers vs. Packaged Boilers.I know there is more to the actual boilers then this, plus advantages and disadvantages, but i just want to know the actual difference between the terms.Packaged Boiler - Pre-designed, pre-built packaged boiler that is built at a shop and transported as 1 unit.Shop Assembled Boiler - Main difference is that These boilers are built to exact customer specifications as opposed to the customer picking out a pre-designed packaged boiler? Is this correct?

Answer:

Pretty much the size of it.
A shop assembled boiler is a packaged boiler. The other type of boiler is a field assembled boiler. Shop or packaged boilers are limited in size do to shipping constraints. This can mean that these boilers may not has as much of a safety factor in terms of performance as a field erected boiler. Some shop assembled boilers come in standard sizes and others are custom built to meet the customers requirements. Even if the boiler is custom designed, the manufacturer may not meet all of the customer's requirements due to standard methods they have for the design of their boilers. As an example: they may only make boilers with an outer gas tight casing while others may use the water tubes welded together to form the pressure containing feature of the fire box. Others may only make D type boilers while other do only A type boilers.
Add to the advantages of a packaged boiler the fact that they are made from parts carefully precut to size at the factory, inspected by people who have seen many boilers of that exact type, and are certain to have all accessories and fittings of the proper size and type. You would be surprised how diverse a set of applications the packaged ones can meet so that shop-assembled to exact customers specifications is generally unnecessary. In ordering, change a burner nozzle, an accessory, or a material and you can cover a wide span using a standard catalog item.
