Question:

should i get steel shafted irons?

i have been playing with hand me down graphite shaft irons and wedges. i was wondering if someone of my stature (5'3, 90 lbs., 12 years old) should be using steel shafted irons. i can definately swing them im just wondering if they are better for making contact

Answer:

Steel will give you more consistency as they don't flex as much as graphite but at the same time are less forgiving. Graphite can give you more flex which increases club head speed for distance but you lose some consistency. I would say stick with your current clubs being your only 12yo and will being a lot in the next 5-6 years. You don't want to be stuck at 17yo and 5'10 swinging clubs that are for someone much shorter.
Yes, i my self is 5'5, 100 lbs 13 years old and i am still using graphite shafts. I am soon making the switch to steel shafts although they are heavier, they make better contact, have better consistency of hitting shots and also hit further as they are heavier. Hope this helps you to making your switch to steel shafts, I'm getting mine very very soon
It depends on your swing speed. If you have a faster swing speed and notice you are consistently hitting high with your irons and having some trouble with accuracy, you will benefit from playing steel shafted irons. If your swing speed is on the slower end of the spectrum, stick with the graphite irons for a couple more years until you swing has developed and you are hitting farther.
As long as the clubs you have now fit you, you should stick with those. You are going to be growing alot in the next few years, so once your current clubs are too small, then by all means feel free to go to steel shafts.
