Question:

Should I invest in periodic fuel additives as well as octane boosters for my 01 BMW?

I have an 01‘ BMW 330i which requires premium gas with a minimum of 91 octane. I‘ve also seen some fuel additives which clean out the engine of gunk and claim to do wonders for the car. Also, a little more kick out of a clean engine can be provided by the octane. Would this be a good idea. The car is almost 10 years old, and even though I‘ve always used premium gas, I‘m sure that some buildup in the engine has to have occurred. Would this be ideal or is it merely a quick fix? Also, I‘m considering some permanent alterations. Nothing too expensive but a good cost benefit change like a kn air filter or something a bit more extensive. Any ideas or suggestions or where to start?

Answer:

This happens often, especially if the couple is young and just starting out in their lives and careers. Assuming the distance is great and the time, like University or a new Job, is just as great, It's really asking to much, to expect the love to last. Married people get divorced all the time, and they live side by side, which of course, may be the reason for the divorce. lol Other couples split up, love sadly, for most of us, is not eternal, but often fleeting. Although while we are in love, we believe it to be so. We all need company and companionship, and other people close to us. In long distance, you can always stay in touch, these days, but you still need some special person in your life, unless you intend to stay at home, with a good book or TV etc. Not the best way to spend ones life.
The additives, as others have said, have a limited effectiveness. I run Lukas Oil's Fuel System Cleaner through my car every 6 months. It's a cheap insurance policy and I've seen the value of many other Lukas Oil products. Many higher mileage car owners have Sea Foam'd their cars. This really does clean the valves and burns out most all impurities on the cylinder walls. Sea Foam has it's downsides as well. Your O2 sensors may need to be replaced and your spark plugs most definitely will need replacement. It is strongly recommended to run the premium fuel, as you do, and to change the oil regularly(3-5k). Keep up with the maintenance schedules and you should have your car for a good long time. Just keep in mind that premium fuel in most the US is only 91 while fuel around the rest of the world is commonly 93.
NO defiantly DO NOT put any additives in your fuel or oil. Most of those additives do not work and they may say the increase horsepower and fuel efficiency but they don't do a whole lot. You will not see or feel a difference with these additives, the best thing you can do for an engine is to use the recommended fuel and keep up with your service records, such as: Oil Change every 3,000 - 5,000 miles (NO matter what kind of oil) Air filter Cleaned every 25,000 miles Spark plugs changed every 50,000-60,000 miles never believe what they tell you on TV. Hope this helps.
