Question:

should i tile my new shower ceiling?

i built a new shower, and plan on tiling up to the ceiling. if i tile the ceiling itself, someone told me this would be a chore to clean. any experience in this? the ceiling is cement board right now, what are my other options? BTW, the tile is 4x4 travertine.

Answer:

I would indeed tile the ceiling. Just be sure the bathroom is well vented with all the hot steam in the room. Just search for good easy cleaners. simple windex on the ceiling? not much soap up there?
The mortar that you are using really needs to be mixed so that is it very sticky and you can add a glue that is sold at any home depot or flooring store. ceilings suck as far as tiling them.
tile it to the ceiling of course, there is too much cleaning stuff on the market right now, for you to be worried about cleaning it. thats the best thing to do for it to look real nice.
Tile the ceiling because the tile is easier to maintain than paint. The ceiling will not get as dirty as the rest of the shower. Do not ever use Windex on travertine, or any other natural stone. The ammonia will etch it, remove sealer and eventually ruin your grout. Never use acidic cleaners of any type on stone. Seal with a good penetrating sealer and clean only with cleaners made for stone. Be sure the shower gets good ventilation to prevent mold and mildew.
