Question:

Silver Leaf Query?

I will be using some silver leaf to cover a small statue soon and want to tarnish/age parts of it to make the undercuts and detail darkerI think I can use an acid of some sort, but do not fancy using acid! I do not want to use paint or boot polish as I just want the silver leaf layer - any ideas what to use that is readily obtainable in England?ThanksKD

Answer:

if you use true silver leaf, light will tarnish it, so photo emulsions ought to work nicelyif you use aluminum alloy leaf, it doesn't tarnish and i haven't found anything that will darken it except oil paint.you could apply them thinned some as a wash, and that way you can add if it is still too light.
