It could be that your fireplace just doesn't draft well, or the chimney needs cleaning. Have someone check it out before lighting it up again.
This Site Might Help You. RE: Why does my house smell like smoke when I light a fire in my fire place? i have the damper open all the way i have that little sliding thing on the bottom open to create an up draft i make time for the flue to heat up. my house smokes up so much that the smoke detectors go off. Please help me i want to enjoy my fireplace to its full potential.
i've always ordered and picked up directly from airsplat. their costs tend to be low, but it looks like everyone's charges went up after the whole spill in the gulf.
depends, if your chimney runs through your house, or outside your house, you might not be getting enough of a draft. Sometimes, you have to warm the chimney first to create an up draft (burning some paper first). The other problem could be creosote buildup in the chimney. Or depending where your chimney cleanout is situated, it might need to be checked. Sometimes creosote will fall down and need to be cleaned out it can even block your pipe if the pipe from your stove ties in to a masonry chimney and the cleanout is in the basement and say your stove is on the main floor. If warming the chimney pipe up with some paper or a firestarter brick doesn't help, and you still get the smoke, that means you need either a sweep, need to check the cleanout (if you have one) or it can even be the height of your chimney relative to the height of the highest peak on your roof (it should be about 4 ft higher than the highest peak). Wind, and barometric pressure can also influence how good your fire takes.
