How does copper-indium-gallium-selenide compare with other solar technologies.Is DSTI (Daystar) the best way to invest?
I have been underwhelmed by commercially available Copper-Indium-Gallium-diSelenide products, but haven't looked, lately. Small startups like DSTI are wild bets. They follow the emotions of the market, so it's possible to make money and lose money just on sentiment, entirely independent of company fundamentals. Remember the dot com boom? If you have money you can afford to lose, you could place bets on, say, 10 or 20 of the startup companies. A more conservative strategy for solar would be to invest in SPWR, FSLR, STP, or other established companies. They're priced kind of high right now, in my opinion, but if you plan to hold for several years, these companies are unlikely to go out of business, and I think solar will ultimately prove to have wide adoption (you may have to wait 5 years, or 10).
I am no expert on solar technologies; but as I understand current technologies there are basically two ways to go--crystalline silicon and thin film. Daystar is in the thin film market. Currently thin film is more economical than crystalline silicon because demand has outstripped supply for crystalline silicon. As I understand it thin film is not as efficient as crystalline silicon and neither is very efficient about 10% and 13%. There is a lot of room for improvement. As for CIGS I do not know a great deal about the technology. I do believe that there are several other companies that are in the CIGS business. I think Global Solar, Nanosolar, Solopower, Heliovolt, and others besides. This industry is a start up industry. Do you remember the biogenetics when it started up? About 95% of the companies that went public are no longer with us. In fact they are still dying off. I sort of expect the solar industry to follow that path.
