Question:

Soldering Aluminum and Steel?

Hello, thanks for helping me out. I got a home project in which I have to secure 2 pieces together. One is steel and the other is aluminum. What kind of solder do I use and if there any general tips you can give me. Its just two flat pieces. Thanks ahead and have a wonderfull day.

Answer:

Aluminum is Cathodic to steel. Its ions enter the steel as a sacrificial metal and eventually rots to a powder, so soldering the two metals is a none stater. You can bond them together with an epoxy resin, but you must make the bond area very large and the bond very thick. Eventually though the ions will travel through the epoxy as a capacitive action as the bond will be the dielectric, but will last a few years before the aluminum turns to dust. You might show this note to your teacher. Unfortunately there are few teachers these days with the scientific knowledge to know what I have told you. mmalky
The two metals can not be soldered together and have any strength to the bond. This can be done with a special fusing method but it takes some special equipment. Do a web search for more information about compatible metals and bonding.
There are quite a few epoxies out there that can handle a task like this.
