Question:

Sulfuric acid/aluminum reactionwhat went wrong?

I've been trying to find a chemical means of making hydrogen, and I heard over the internet that aluminum in a solution of sulfuric acid would create hydrogen gas and aluminum sulfideI've tried concentrated and diluted mixtures with differing amounts of aluminumnothing appears to work close to what I expectedI had a few bubbles with the diluted SA, but with the concentrated stuff it didn't even bubbleDo I need a catalyst of some sort? Heat it maybe?Could the freezing temp (I'm doing this outside) conflict with the reaction? If anyone has any suggestions or better options for chemical hydrogen, let me knowThanks.

Answer:

Okay I can see what you tried to do: 2Al + 3H2SO4 - 3H2 + Al2(SO4)3 Maybe the reaction is very slowIf you saw bubbles, that was probably the H2 gas formingLook for a catalyst, but I think H2SO4 is too dangerous to be messing around with like thatI'd rather use 2HCl + Mg - MgCl2 + H2 This reaction is very fast and it is probably less expensiveMake sure you do it inside a gas collecting tube (inside water of course!) if you're planning on using this hydrogen gasI hope this helps.
