Question:

Systems of Equations math homework. i need help!?

heres the question:Brass is a mixture of copper and zinc. A brass block containing 60% zinc and a brass bar containing 40% zinc are melted together. The resulting mixture is 51% zinc. If 400kg of the new mixture is obtained, what was the original mass of the block?i know that the answer is 220kg(on bottom of worksheet) but i need to know how to do this for tomorrow? please help ! :)

Answer:

(a million) x + y 5 (2) x - y 3 (2) x - y 3 x 3 + y (2)' (2)' in (a million) (3 + y) + y 5 2y + 3 5 2y 2 y a million (a million)' (a million)' in (2) x - a million 3 x 4 verification : x 4 ; y a million 4 + a million 5 5 5 x 4 ; y a million 4 - a million 3 3 3 very final answer : x 4 ; y a million
the filter is probably clogging up. when you leave it sit then dirt can clog it, then after awhile the dirt gets washed away. change the fluid and filter but do,nt flush it.
i see that in another post, an ans has been given. i'm only giving another way which you may find easier ratio of block : bar needed is inversely proportional to distance from final composition (51 - 40) : (60 - 51) 11:9 so mass of original block (11/20)*400 220 kg ---------
