In old times lightning rods were necessary because there weren't all of the utilities running in the wall. When Ben Franklin invented it there was no indoor plumbing or electrical service. The lightning rod discharged the lightning around the house rather than through it. In today's houses this is achieved through the plumbing and electrical systems that are in the house
Would youn know how to use one? I wouldn;t and haven't seen any. They all have sprinklers, alarms, extinguishers, and sometimes hoses. Fire regs have state and local differences too
