Hello, I'm thirteen years old, and II took apart this old small vacuum and it's as strong as a dang weed-blower, I cut the cord off and attached it with electrical tape and wire-nuts. And it is not one of the grounded motors either, it has a plastic case over the motor. It has a fan that sucks air from one end, and blows it out of the hole into the bag on the other end, also on the other side of the motor is a shaft possibly this wide: ----- so im wondering if it could be strong enough to move a 150 lb person? If so, how would I power it with batteries? (or even convert the AC motor to DC.)Thanks!
Don't waste your time. Sure, it might move you a little bit and not fast or far. Remember, the more the load, the higher the current. Stop it spinning with the power on and I guarantee it'll draw a lot more than 12 amps. See if you can find some low voltage DC motors like car engine starter motors or those used on motorized wheelchairs. Why they started rating vacuum cleaners by current draw escapes me as it has little bearing on the suction power.
first of all, 0.02 amps will kill you. Second, this is an AC motor, it will not run at DC, or on batteries. Also, this is loud enough to cause permanent ear damage, get ear protectors. Torque depends on the gearing, and on the ratings of the motor. .
Don't listen to mister safety there. It is good to tinker with things. Even if you get zapped a couple times, it is probably good for you. It likely won't kill you and it will teach you a lesson! You will have a tough time getting that motor to work with a go kart. Even if you went to the effort to buy or build an inverter (ie. DC to AC converter), you still wouldn't be able to control the speed. Unfortunately, the speed of AC motors are fixed by the frequency of the AC that is supplied. Here in north america, that is 60hz which usually translates to 1800RPM. In case you were wondering, you can figure out the horsepower of any motor if you know the power. Here is how: Power = Volts x Amps 12A motor -> P = 115 x 12 = 1380 Watts 1 Horsepower = 746 Watts Therefore, 1380 Watts = 1.85 Horsepower 1.85 Horsepower is more than enough power to get you rolling. Maybe not very fast, but it will still run. In fact, using only 2 horsepower, we were able to get our solar car rolling at 40mph! A winch motor actually spins a lot faster than you would expect. The motor is hooked to a gear box which reduces the speed. You could probably take a winch apart and use the output shaft of the motor directly. A car starter is probably not a very good option because there are too mechanisms that allow it to be engaged and disengaged from the ring gear on an engine. Too many parts and too hard to adapt. The only other sources of DC motors I can think of would be scooters, battery powered electric drills, big toy cars and maybe old photocopiers. The truth is that by the time you get the motor, batteries, wire and switches, it would be faster and easier to use a gasoline lawn mower engine. Even a small mower engine has a lot of power compared to electric.
