Question:

Utica boiler...faulty water shutoff...help!?

I have had the boiler fix-it man here several times and his opinion is to get a new heating system. As that is out of the question at the moment, I would like to get through this Indiana winter with consistant heat. The water shutoff valve is not shutting off when the water reaches it's desired level. Or maybe the sensor (I am assuming that there is one) is faulty. Either way, I go down into the basement at least twice a day to manually fill the old beast. Is there anybody in the know out there who can either give me some advice (besides what the fix-it man said) or can direct me to somebody who can? Although I am a GIRL I have a pretty good grasp on spatial concepts and am great at following directions.

Answer:

As a capable person, you need to try and get hold of the manufacturer of the boiler...it may be on-line and have a customer service number that you can call...some of the older items used to have a tag on them that had the name and number which you could call for help...yes some companies still have the same number that they had when the 10 digit number system was initiated.
your water fill valve is more than likely mechanical.if you look on this fill valve you will find the manufacturer. I will bet its mcdonnellmiller.you should be able to find someone to put one in. if a boiler tech tells you to buy a new boiler find another.B/c he should have something like this on his truck. or easily to get.if you know anyone with plumbing experience you might be able to buy something and make it work.I dont know if this is electriclly operated or not.this is not a difficult repair.even if the piping is bad. piping is fixable too. if your going to buy new The cheapest way is to get a domestic water heater sized for what you have. use the water heater for domestic hot water and heating. if you have hot water system. shouldnt matter though sounds like you need some newer stuff anyway. buy a hot water heater without a internal heat exchanger. you want external heat exchanger cheaper in the long run.the reason this is cheaper is b/c water heaters are lot cheaper than boilers. and you can run a water heater at pretty much any temp you want.a boiler guy will argue trust me. but do some searching and asking about this theory. I found alot of info on web. google. I hope i have helped sorry its so long but itll be worth your time
