Question:

valves adjustment in 6 cylinder in line mercury marine?

what the valves adjustment spies in the 1979 Mercury-marine engine, 6 cylinder in-line 165hp 4.089L?

Answer:

There are 2 different ways, with the engine warm remove the valve cover start the engine and 1 at a time back the adjuster nut off till the lifter starts to click and tighten it 3/4 of a turn going 1/4 turn at a time this is very mussy with oil all over everything. The easiest way is to turn the engine to number 1 TDC and back off the adjusters till you can just turn the push rods with your fingers and then retighten 3/4 turn do this in the following order #1 E+ IN #2 - IN #3 E #4 - IN #5 - E--- then turn the engine 1 turn to number 6 TDC and adjust the remaining valves the same as the first in this order # 2 - E # 3 - IN #4 - E #5 - IN # 6 IN+ E Then reinstall the valve cover and your done much cleaner way
If it is an outboard 2 stroke there are no vlaves to adjust, it uses reeds in the intake. If it is any type of 4 stroke get a repair manual for proper specs.
From 0 lash turn the rocker arm nut 3/4 turn. Before you start, lay some rags under the engine to ketch the oil. The engine needs to be running. Loosen each nut until you hear the rocker arm stat to click, then tighten it slowly until the clicking stops, your now at 0 lash, now tighten the nut down 3/4 turn or 270 degrees, don't do this to fast the lifter needs to adjust. After adjusting, take a center punch held at 45 degree angle and punch the stud and top of the nut, this will assure the nut stays adjusted and wont back off. Put the valve cover on and wash the oil off, a spray can of brake cleaner works great. Remove the rags and your done. Happy boating. .
