Question:

variable speed drive on wound rotor motor?

can we use VSD on wound rotor induction motor?.

Answer:

Does the motor have brushes and a commutator? If yes, then a Phase Control type of VSD will work with this proviso: *The field must be permanent magnet, or shunt-wound with separate continuous exitation.
I assume that you are asking about a wound rotor induction motor (WRIM) with slip rings. There are a number of variable speed drive configurations for that type of motor some of which date back nearly 100 years. The most modern configuration designed specifically for a WRIM is the electronic slip power recovery drive system. A variable frequency drive unit can be applied to a WRIM if the slip rings are shorted together. The best method is to remove the brushes and brush holders and brazing a copper bus bar across the rings.
In my opinion ceramic is best.
