Im looking for a 14' aluminum boat but cant find ANY on craigslist. So were thinking about getting a 12' cause they have some on craigslist. We would have 2 people most of the time on the boat that weigh altogether 360 lbs. but we would somtimes have another person on the boat with us that weighs 160-200lbs. Can a 12' hold 520-560lbs? or should i get a 14'? and what are the capacities of both?
Whoever you are buying the boat from should have some idea of its load capacity, and be able to answer the question of if it can hold ~600lbs or so load (I assume you guys might also like to carry a cooler, a few beers, some fishing rods or other miscellaneous stuff). A 12' should work ok just don't go too heavy on the motor, though a 14' would be a bit more comfortable and stable.
the cap of a aluminum boat depends on the manufacturer. as example Crestliner rates their 12' utility 602 lbs and 10 hp and their 14' at 900 lbs and 25 hp. you did not mention where you plan to go boating. it sounds like you really need the 14' if you plan on a 3rd person on board. boats are rated as if we all weighed 150 lbs. 12' are rated for 3 people and 14' are rated for 4 people. the 14' will also be more seaworthy and will have more room for coolers etc. hope this helps
