you need to understand that copper is a metal. Ions are things with an electric charge. So a copper ion is copper metal with a positive charge on it. Copper is special because it is a transition metal so it can have different amounts of positive charges on it. In your case, malachite has copper 1+ and copper 2+ ions together with other stuff, which makes it very unusual. Pennies have copper, but over time, the oxygen in the air will make it into an ion by a process called oxidation, which is why it will turn greenish. Oxidation simply means that there will be a chemical reaction: the electric charge of the copper will be involved with the electric charge of oxygen.
