My opinion is that you NEVER want to buy a carpen shampoo machine. The ones for regular people are really worthless. The best thing to do is get somebody over to shampoo your carpets - they have a huge machine in their truck, and it actually works. Talk to any rental outfit or store that sells construction materials - the contractors often hire these guys to clean up their places... and they're not that expensive.
