One of the defining characteristics of a metal is magnetism. It's easier to identify the metallic elements that are exceptions, like Mercury and Aluminum. Aluminum is a metalloid - these can have characteristics of both metals and non-metals Also, alloys such as bronze, steel and pewter may or may not have some metallic characteristics. Look at a periodic table - it's your best tool!
The most common ones are iron, nickel, and cobalt. Any alloys containing one of those elements also becomes magnetic.
