Question:

What are the northern lights called in the south...?

Hey, I seen a picture today of the northern lights today and it was in New Zealand which is south of the equator. So how can it be called NORTHern lights when its in the south ? I think of the northern light typically appearing in the Artic which is the north pole.

Answer:

Down there it's called aurora australis or the southern polar lights.
aurora australis or southern polar lights or just southern lights
There are lights at both poles. The Northern Lights are called the Aurora Borealis. The Southern Lights are called the Aurora Australis. Those terms really only mean 'northern lights' and 'southern lights'.
I wondered the same thing a few months ago, looked it up on google, and found out that the aurora in the north pole is called the aurora borealis, while the aurora in the south pole is called the aurora australis.
Southern Polar Lights or Aurora Australis.
