It's one of the Russian republics but it'd rather cut ties with Russia. During the fall of the U.S.S.R. (early 1990s), it declared its independence. It has a Muslim majority, I think. We covered Tatarstan (and its complex relationship with Russia/the U.S.S.R.) a bit in my Russian course.
