Question:

What does bonding brackets mean?

I know bonding means putting the brackets on your teeth. But I've had my braces on for 13 months already, next month is supposed to be my last month (I was supposed to have them for 14 months). My dentist told me that my next appointment, I would be getting my braces bonded. I have no clue what that means. Help?

Answer:

Never heard it called that before, but I wonder whether it could be that he's giving you a fixed or permanent retainer. That means that instead of a removable retainer, he cements or glues (or bonds) brackets to the lingual (or on the tongue side) of your teeth, with a wire holding them together. Such helps to stabilize them and keep them from moving back to the crooked position. Unfortunately, generally teeth want to go back to the position they sought for themselves, the misaligned one that led you to get braces in the first place. But why not ask the dentist, or someone on his staff?
