Question:

what happens when copper is left in vinegar (acetic acid)? also could anyone give me the chemical reaction.?

i know copper dissolves in the acetic acid but i want to know the exact chemical principle involved. glad for any help. thanks

Answer:

uhm copper doent react with vinegar as a metal . its copper oxide the greenish layer that forms which has Cu2+ ions thats soluble in vinegar which is y we use vinegar to clean copper. as a metal copper is pretty stable and doesnt react with organic or mineral acids.. if it was iron it wud react slowly but not copper copper is less reactive than hygrogen in the reactivity series and hence it cant replace copper. fine?
