Question:

What is a wiring harness and what does it do for a car?

I am wanting to buy this d16y8 vtec motor and tranny from this guy for 350 dollars but he said he doesnt have the wiring harness. what is that and will it cost a lot?

Answer:

If you are outing the engine into a compatible vehicle then it will already have one so you will not need to buy it but I have to ask what are you thinking changing engines if you have to ask a basic question like whats a wiring harness but good luck.
It is the bundle of wires that run everywhere in the car. In this case you are buying the mechanical parts, but not the electrical wires that connect them.
A wiring harness is a bunch of wires that run out of a piece of equipment such as stereos, transmissions. steering columns etc. It typically has a plug on the end that plugs into another plug and makes the part work. Without it you have to splice wires from the transmission to the various places it needs to go. Such as but not limited to sensors and the computer.
