Hi Toast,When a smoke detector sees smoke, it's actually detecting particles moving between 2 detection surfaces. There could be something as simple as a little dust or spider web between them. Blowing the unit out with compressed air (GENTLY!!) or a fireplace bellows will normally resolve this.Usually, the chirping is a low battery warning. You may very well have a dead battery right out of the package. Try replacing the battery with a NEW ALKALINE BATTERY, and NOT a value battery from a dollar store!If neither of these remedies work, it's time to return the smoke detector to the place of purchase for a new one.-Jim-

Rental yards sometimes have power floor scrapers for rent. They can be used on both wood and concrete subfloors. I took out 700 sq feet of slate tile, best $40 I ever spent. Call your local rental yard and see what they suggest, in fact call a few, I found only one yard with the power scraper. If no luck there I agree with the guy who mentioned the chipper hammer.
