My quot;check engine soonquot; light came on yesterday and soon after that I took it to the nearest Midas to have the diagnostic test run on it - they stated I needed an ERG valve. I have no clue what it is and was told that it could run $160. - $300. for my 1900 Astro van. what is an ERG valve? I have noticed that my van has a low humming sound when I'm driving it.
The EGR valve is there to reduce nitrous oxide emissions and lower the temp of the combustion charge. This has the affect of reducing the octane requirement of the engine. This isn't a bad thing. When the valve hangs open, the thing will run bad at idle and could even die. The thing is, the valve could be perfectly fine and the sensor could be bad. Since some states won't give you a sticker if the light is on, you're probably stuck with replacement.
An egr valve is an exhaust gas recirculation valve, basicly it allows for exhaust gas to be routed into incoming air-fuel mix- it causes reduced emissions. They r expensive, know however that often when a diagnostic is run and egr is the read out alot of times its an O2 sensor(oxgyen sensor), the egr and O2 sensors work together so its hard for a computer to idenitify the exact prob, u can take ur van 2 an exhaust shop and have them inspect it. Which i highly recomend, that way u know 4 sure what the prob is. Good luk hope i helped!!!
EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation. It recirculates your exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber to lower temperatures and NOx emissions. This valve commonly gets clogged with carbon due to the fact it's recirculating exhaust gases. If the diaphram is not broken or damaged and still works, frequently you can simply remove the EGR valve and have the carbon cleaned out. It's a dirty job, but can be done if you can get to the EGR valve. If you do need to purchase the part it typically runs about $175. Labor charges will depend on where it's located.
If initially the codes confirmed that the EGR valve grew to become into defective and grew to become into no longer replaced this might smash the o2 sensor. whilst the EGR is caught open simply by fact of carbon strengthen the engine is taking in extra air it is coming from the blistered gases out of the exhaust and re burning them interior the process the EGR. The O2 sensor will examine this gases passing interior the process the exhaust and point out a lean mix of gasoline and could sign the ECM to strengthen the gasoline to the engine nsequently after a time of employing with mistaken mixtures the o2 sensor will fail. My suggestion is to change the EGR and the O2 sensor then highway try the vehicle.then have the codes rechecked. additionally if the engine isn't working mushy this might reason the transmission to act up.verify that the vacuum hose is linked to the modulator valve on the decrease back of the transmission. some transmissions have a working laptop or computer on a separate circuit interior the device and if the engine isn't working solid computer will p.c.. up the incorrect sign and transmission won't shift properly.. solid good fortune oh and the vehicle ECM or computer isn't your difficulty.
Exhaust Gas Recirculation It redirects a portion of the exhaust gasses from the exhaust manifold back into the intake manifold so they can be re-burned. This is part of the emissions system that has been used since the early 70's.
