Question:

What is difference between ac and dc motors?

easy to understand explanation would be nice

Answer:

Dc is direct current meaning the electrical current is either -or+ and ac is alternating current which constantly switches from + to -
ac motors use alternating current. polarity changes amny times in a second. rotates in one direction specified. dc motors change the direction of roatation with change in polarity
HI Rocky, It's not that easy. For DC Power = voltage x current For AC Power = (voltage x current x phase angle) Single phase. (input power) For AC Power (3-phase) = (voltage x current x phase angle x sq-rt of 3) (input power) power out = above x eff Who ever ticked the thumbs down, don't do it unless you understand, my job is a technician at a leading fan company in the UK and i know my answer is correct, if you can't understand it then thats your problem, you certainly won't learn this at school or college because even teachers in physics don't understand it themselves, they are fresh out of university and only know basics of electric motors. I'm an EXPERT in this field!
At the very basics in least then a DC motor uses direct current and an AC motor uses alternating current. DC motors are prone to problems because of the commutator that gets egg shaped when the carbon brushes wear it down and that also wears down the brushes. An AC motor only uses electromotive force but the bearings can wear out as they can in a DC motor. Three phase AC is it most maintenance free.
This is not so easy to explain. If you looked on the web for how ac motors work and also for DC motors, you could almost certainly find some animations that would be understandable. Generally an DC motor uses commutators to create an offset in the magnetic fields created in the rotor. An AC motor uses a capacitor to slightly delay the AC waveform, and in that way, offset the magnetic field produced in the rotor. but without actually seeing some sort of diagrams, this will not make much sense.
