Fuel cells are a form of battery. All batteries work my converting the energy produced by a chemical reaction into an electrical potential. In a fuel cell, the reaction involved is the combustion of hydrogen with oxygen. This combustion takes place across a specially engineered membrane so that most of the energy is released as electrical potential and not heat. The product of the reaction is water.
