This Site Might Help You. RE: Where can I get lime mortar mix? I need to repoint a chimney, built in 1936. I read that before 1940 they used quot;hydraulic limequot; mortar instead of cement mortar. Apparently the lime mortar is softer and won't cause the bricks to crack. But I cannot find lime mortar mix anywhere. Is it still available?
I'm not sure if anyone sells it as a mix as they do concrete mix. Masons usually mix it themselves. It consists of lime and either 2 or 3 parts sharp sand. Long ago they mixed it 2 parts sand to 1 part lime but in 1936 it was likely 3 parts sand. Today mainly non-hydraulic limes for lime plasters are produced and a very small number of kilns are still producing hydraulic lime for the building industry. Where I live Sherman-Williams and Kelly-Moore paint stores sell it.
One recipe for lime mortar is: 1 part lime to 2 parts mason sand (not beach sand) and just enough water for the mix to stick to the trowel but still spread easily. Portland cement can be added to increase workability and whiteness but should comprise no more than 20% of the mix. Too much cement makes the mix too hard and can damage historic (soft) brick as the brick expands and contracts due to seasonal changes in moisture. A question similar to yours was asked on this site August 12, 2007. The reply had a bit different recipe but it is certainly worth reviewing as historic masons (The Dead Men) had their own recipes. Hope this helps
