Question:

What is the copper pipe coming out of the coil system at the bottom of my furnace/air conditioning unit?

It comes out and goes up into the ceiling next to another pipe. My dad installed a new water heater yesterday and I think he banged it and it is leaking air now. It is a gas furnace and I am afraid now that gas is leaking into the garage. It is not part of the big gas line connected to both the furnace and hot water heater.

Answer:

The leaking air you hear is actually the freon in the air conditioning system. It's a very serious problem. Soon your ac will blow warm air, then the compressor is likely to go bad. Asap, call ac company to repair the leak. I suggest the ac to be turned off until the service person come to look at it. Please do it soon.
Try a moist vac yo suck the entire water out of the line make sure you may have the major shut off and a faucet open and in the event you nonetheless get somewhat water use the bread also does husband recognize tips on how to solder easy the pipe and joints use soldering paste if it is 1/2 pipe all you need is set 1/2 solder warmness becoming except solder melts by using touching hot fitting no longer through the flame of the torch
The two copper lines are refrigerant lines; the small one, the liquid high pressure line, the bigger, insulated one the low pressure suction line. Dad should have not even come close to 'banging' either refrigerant line. If either one has a leak, its going to cost $$$ to fix it, and your air conditioner will be down all weekend until a qualified tech can get out there. Exposing what is supposed to be a closed, sealed system to ANY atmospheric air will require the installation of a filter/drier.
