Question:

What is the difference between a homogeneous and a heterogeneous substance?

What type of substances are these:iron orequartzsoft drinkmilksaltwaternitrogen

Answer:

homogenous is a substance that is consistent throughout it. water in a glass is the same thing everywhere in the glass. heterogeneous is a substance that isn't consistent throughout, like a salad. in a bowl of salad, you have lettuce, tomatoes, croutons, maybe cheese, etc. in the same salad, you have many different thongs that aren't mixed. now if you made a liquidy puree of the salad, then it would be homogenous because it would all be a mix of everything and would be consistent. basically, heterogeneous means diverse in character or content. usually involving substances in different phases such as solid liquid or gas. everything there is homogeneous
iron ore: generally heterogeneous - it's Fe2O3 with a bunch of other random silicon stuff in there, generally. There's not really that much iron in there. quartz - generally homogeneous, SiO2 soft drink - homogeneous, solution of H2O, H2CO3, and flavors. Milk - homogeneous because it is distributed fairly uniformly. It's a mixture called a colloid, or liquid suspending particles that aren't dissolved, but are constantly jostled so they never settle out so on a smaller scale it can be considered heterogeneous. salt - homogeneous. Usually NaCl is what is is, but it can be the product of any acid-base reaction. water - H2O, homogeneous nitrogen - the element, or the substance? N is the element, N2 is the molecule. Homogeneous. The definition of homogeneous is that the particles are uniformly distributed, so you don't observe chunks. This includes when something is dissolved. Heterogeneous means that it is not uniformly distributed, you can observe that one part is much different than another.
