Question:

What is the difference between a sleeper and a sofa?

I am looking for a new couch and loveseat. When I look at furniture websites they offer sofas and sleepers. I am somewhat confused on the differences since the both have identical measures and they don't have foldout beds in them.

Answer:

Well, a sleeper is a sofa whose back folds down flat and along with the seat becomes a double bed. A pull-out sofa is a sofa that has a spring-loaded bed inside under the seats that springs out into a double bed, usually. A sofa is a sofa, now you can lay down and have a nap on it but it's not overly comfortable for sleeping. So there you have it.
a sleeper is a sofa or love seat (or occasionally a chair) that opens out into a bed. that means that the furniture itself folds out into a sleeping surface.
A sleeper sofa has a folded mattress under the cushions that unfolds to make a bed. A futon just drops the back down to make a bed.

All sleepers do have a pull out mattress under the cushions. All sofas are just a sofa to sit on and do not have a pull out mattress under the cushions. If you do not need a sleeper, do not get one because sleepers really do not make for comfortable sofas which you will be using regularly. A sleeper is good in a back room that is not used often and is more so used for sleeping when guests arrive for an overnight stay.
