Soy milk is made from soybeans. The soybeans are soaked in boiling water and then ground to make milk. Maple syrup , vanilla or similar is typically added to sweeten the milk. Lactose is an ingredient in cow's milk that is difficult for the human body to break down. Some people have less tolerance for it than others it can cause gas, bloating, cramping and intestinal distress. So lactose-free milk is cow's milk with the lactose removed or broken down by an enzyme. So if your baby was not really allergic to cow's milk but intolerant of lactose, a lactose-free milk may work for him/her. To help with expense, I would suggest using Next Steps Formula for babies that are 9-24 months old instead of milk from the grocery store. If you get the Target or Wal-Mart generic brands, they are about $12 per can and last almost one week. It is more convenient and less expensive and you can continue to use soy.
Lactose free milk is cows-milk based. The Lactose, one of the sugars, has been removed. Soy milk is a plant-based milk. Chances are your daughter is allergic to the proteins in cow's milk, not the Lactose, which is why they are putting her on Soy milk. I would call the pediatrician to discuss before trying the Lactose Free milk.
