it started out with the coca cola company (i think) they had to find a way to keep there drink product fresh and keep it with a taste, so they used carbon water and when carbon water is stored in a closed space with no oxygen,it tightens up (say for the plastic bottles for example),then some years later they started to use aluminum cans and like i said before, it hardens up with the carbon inside
