It can. If I light it in another room and then bring into the room where I want to burn it in, it usually doesn't. Lighting the match to burn the incense sometimes sets my smoke detector off, which is why I light it in another room. I also usually place it away the smoke detector, just to be sure. The door being closed or not doesn't make a difference - it usually doesn't give off that much smoke. I've only used stick incense, so I don't know if different types would give different results.
