What the picture shows is a sealed cartrage bottom bracket. Older bottom brackets had cups, bearings, and separate spindles, individual parts could be replaced separately. The point of a cup set was that it cost less to replace one part than the whole bottom bracket. Also the bottom bracket could be taken apart and serviced, so it could last longer if it was taken care of. I have a 40 year old bottom bracket that is still in working order, no cartrage bottom bracket could ever last as long
